St. Paul’s Church Renovation

Rakvere, Estonia

This proposal was part of an international competition to reuse a church structure in the town of Rakvere, Estonia. The structure was the last church built before the iron curtain fell over eastern Europe and was crudely turned into a gymnasium for the better part of the last 50 years. The proposed intervention aims to reactivate the structure by turning it into an accoustical performance hall as part of a larger music and arts center for the town. The annex structure and church shell are linked by a transparent roof which ties the two structures together accross an enclosed courtyard. Outside the complex the abandoned “comunity gardens” are refocused to become a public gathering spot for festivals and concerts.
