How do you build a 21st century home in a neighborhood of mid century modern homes? Stick to first principles. While many in the cozy suburb of Elmhurst, west of Chicago opt to tear down and replace their mid century homes with faux historical McMansions these owners opted to for a stripped down modernism that borrows from the simple lean to and shed roofs of their 1950’s ranch and salt box neighbors. The contrasting prefinished aluminum panels against the rich wood texture creates a visual and textural dynamism with contemporary materials. The simple geometry translates to the interior where the house explodes into a voluminous family room and kitchen overlooked by a second floor lofted walkway, bathed in south and west facing light. The space is punctuated by a two story fireplace wall and multiple hanging contemporary light fixtures.
